Honorary President

Claus G. Budelmann is one of the Shareholders of Bergos AG and served on the Board of Directors from 1988 to 2025, including a decade as Chairman from 1999 to 2009. Since 2025, he has held the title of Honorary President of the bank.

In 2018, together with a group of accomplished entrepreneurs, he acquired the majority shares of the then Berenberg Bank (Switzerland) AG and established first Bergos Berenberg AG, and then in 2021 the fully independent Swiss Private Bank Bergos AG. In 1981, Claus-Günther Budelmann was appointed General Manager of the bank by Baron Heinrich von Berenberg-Gossler. In 1988, he became a shareholder and personally liable partner of Berenberg Bank, a position in which he led the company until 2008. That same year, he also opened Berenberg’s office in Switzerland. Claus-Günther Budelmann’s deep ties to our bank go back to 1965, when, after graduating from high school, he began an apprenticeship at the Berenberg Bank. In 1968, he gained international experience working as a trainee at Hambros Bank, Thos. Stephens Poole, (insurance broker), L. Messel & Co. (stockbrocker), as well as Czarnikow (sugar trader).

On 2 February 2021, the founder of our bank in Switzerland and long-time member of the Board of Directors was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his great services to culture in Hamburg.

In April 2014, Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II appointed him a Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his merits to develop the British-German relations in his function as British Honorary Consul in Hamburg and as Chairman of the Anglo-German Club in Hamburg.
