When Giuseppe Verdi died in 1901, an estimated 300,000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of his coffin and pay their final respects to him and his wife, Giuseppina. Their remains were transferred to Milan’s Casa di Riposo. Outside the crypt, Arturo Toscanini conducted 850 singers with an orchestra to perform the “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from Verdi’s opera Nabucco.
